Guideline for the prevention of neonatal Group B Streptococcal infection.

Prolonged rupture of membranes at term (>18 hours)
  • There is insufficient evidence for prophylactic antibiotics for term PPROM
  • In the absence of signs of infection, intrapartum antibiotics should not be administered to mother or baby, even if membranes have been ruptured for over 24 hours.
  • Intrapartum antibiotics for Group B strep prophylaxis should be considered where a combination of risk factors for GBS exists.
  • If there is concern about chorioamnionitis then ensure appropriate antibiotics given, see chorioamnionitis page.

Caution; the antibiotic doses recommended on this website are intended for adult patients with normal renal and liver function unless otherwise stated. Dosing advice for patients with renal impairment is available here.
